» Poker Strategy
You are now viewing our Poker Strategies and Tips section and this is where we will focus on strategies that will help you win when you play poker. You will also tell you how to play the more popular poker games such as Texas Holdem poker.

The rules are more or less universal for each of the different poker games and the winning poker strategies are those that are generally accepted by the champion players and experts on each of the games. There are no big secrets here, but you will find the basics of what you need to know to be a consistent winner.

Bluffing

All successful poker players must be able to make a well-timed bluff. The bluff is probably the most talked-about poker concept, although it is not used as often as people believe. Still, to exclude bluffing from poker would result in an uninteresting game: If you never bluff you become too predicable and will not be able to maximize your winnings, much less win at all. You bluff when you have no chance of winning the pot or when you are trying to steal the pot before all the cards are dealt. In a cash game, it is possible to calculate whether a bluff will be profitable or not. To do this, you compare the odds of making a successful bluff to the size of the bet and the size of the pot. Therefore, an important skill is the ability to determine the likelihood that your opponent/s will fold.

Bankroll and Money Management
Many new poker players underestimate the necessary funds to play poker for an extended period of time. Chances are that you will either win or loose quite a bit already by playing 3-4 hours. So, as a beginner, try to start out playing at low limits to get a feel for the games and to minimize losses.

Be nice at the poker tables
Poker is a game, and very few of the people who play it are out to earn a living from it. There are players who know that they're not making the correct plays, but they're more concerned with having fun than making money. Don't yell at them for playing the game their way and don't call people idiots because they sucked out on you. One can get frustrated when it happens, but as long as people are playing by the rules, be nice and let it be water under the bridge. Bad beats happen so often that if you learn to keep your temper in check, you'll find that the water under the bridge is changed really quick. Learn to handle the bad beat.

Also, be involved in the discussions here at CEINT.COM. Post your hand histories, so others can give input on how you could have played a hand differently, or post your own advice on other peoples' hands.
